Speech/Communication Class Info in Either Auburn or Roseville


Auburn - Meets Mondays, 1 hour classes (1-5pm)
Roseville - Meets Wednesdays, 1 hour classes (1-5pm)

Elise Pope and Anne Weiland have been teaching speech and debate for a combined total of 18 years.  They are both moms with homeschooling experience and have a passion for teaching students the tools for communication.

The classes are offered to students from 3rd - 12th grade, and range in the topics and skills learned.  Each 1 hour class meets once a week.  The information covered for each class is intended to span over 1 academic year and is divided into 2 semesters (each 12 or 13 weeks).

Communications classes are starred  in the list below list but each of the other classes highlights in class communication opportunities.  We are looking to offer the classes with the greatest level of interest (4 will be offered at the Wednesday times, and 4 offered at the Monday times).  You can submit your request to register on their website, http://www.communicationtoolsforyouth.com/.

Informal Logic  7-12 grade

Communication Tools Class Descriptions

Oral Presentations: 3rd – 6th grade
The focus of this class is to practice and strengthen memorization skills and oral recitation through the use of poetry, show and tell, classic speeches, etiquette such as introductions and conversation starters, skits, and group communication games.
Cost: $160/semester 
Type of Class: Year long class, Academic
Required Materials: No text required
Meets: 1hr/week
Speech Smarts  - 7th -12th  grade.

Class time will be spent in actively learning communication skills and preparing speeches. The final class for each unit will be student presentations. Excellent preparation for Speech in Communications I
Unit 1:  Let’s Say It Now! Learning to quickly plan and give an impromptu speech
Unit 2: Let’s Speak Up! Developing and delivering a platform speech
Unit 3: Let’s Act It Out! Editing, dramatizing and presenting a piece of literature
Unit 4: Let’s Broadcast the News: Learning to speak about recent news.

Informal Logic – 7th-12th  grade
This course will focus primarily on informal logic; the art of reasoning well. We will be learning to analyze arguments and spot logical fallacies using games, activities and stories in class. This course builds in students the ability to follow and understand the world around them. Excellent preparation for Debate in Communications I
Cost: $200/semester
Type of Class: Fall Semester Only, Academic
Required Text: The Fallacy Detective
Meets: 1hr/week

      4.) Current Events – 7th-12th grade

Current Events focuses on introducing and increasing student knowledge and understanding of daily news events. Local, state, national and international items will be examined, encouraging students to explore and learn more about their world. Additionally, we will take advantage of the group setting to provide students public speaking opportunities.
Cost: $200/semester
Type of Class: Spring Semester Only, Academic
Required Text: No text is required, however, this course uses a daily internet news source as a major resource. The course also requires news magazines, newspapers, television and radio news for specific weeks so parents must assist the students in gaining access to these resources.
Meets: 1hr/week






5.) Communications I – 9th - 12th grade

Course covers the rhetorical subjects of speech and debate,  long recognized to bring together and put into  practice all the academic skills your student has been working to achieve up to this point.   Speech units include Impromptu, Original Oratory, and Extemporaneous. Debate units include introductory theory in argumentation and class competition.
Cost: $200/semester
Type of Class: Year long, Academic

    6.) Government - 10th - 12th grade

One Semester of high school government dedicated to the high school student with understanding and background in American History. Additionally, we will take advantage of class time to provide students opportunities to communicate in a group setting.
Cost: $200/semester
Type of Class: Fall Semester Only, Academic

    7.) Economics – 10th-12th grade

One semester of basic Economics introducing students to important and pertinent concepts that give them the tools to understand the world around them.
Cost: $200/semester
Type of Class: Spring Semester Only, Academic
