For the first semester, this class will focus on the persuasive essay which is the 2014-2015 writing assignment. The class will utilize a systematic approach to the 5-paragraph essay format, breaking down each component into an understandable building block. The students will learn how to write a solid thesis statement, engaging topic sentences, and interesting conclusions among other pertinent writing techniques. The end result will be a completed essay to turn into their ES before Christmas break. This class is specially designed for the older student who reads adequately but still struggles with proper spelling. We will learn the tools that will enable the student to logically understand why words are spelled the way they are. This will happen through: discussion, keeping a spelling journal, and dictation. Students will learn advanced phonics, syllabication, and the application of spelling rules. The goal of this class is to create a successful learning environment which respectfully engages the student.
