Charlotte Mason Group Forming

Charlotte Mason Homeschooling

Charlotte Mason was a 19th century educator who has a distinct understanding of children and how to give them a love for God, life and learning.  She believed in giving children a lively and varied education using “living books”, including the Bible, in her own style of Classical Education.

If you use any of Charlotte Mason’s teaching philosophy in your homeschool or are interested in learning more about her, let’s get together and chat!  My heart is to create a Charlotte Mason/Classical Education community for parents and children.  Ideally, this would involve book studies, get togethers and, possibly, classes.

Please email me if you are interested! legalsiclan@gmail.com

I am Nicole Legalsi and I have 6 children, 2 of whom have graduated and 4 of whom I am currently homeschooling.  I have been homeschooling off and on for about 16 years and have recently found great success in my own home using a combination of Charlotte Mason methodology and classical education.

Our commitment: Support students as they learn to think critically, to confidently communicate truth, and to humbly lead in whatever capacity God has for them.

Our desire: Have a ton of fun in the process!

A few expected Q & A:

Q: How old does my student need to be to participate?
A: The club is for ages 12 - 18.  Debate is for high school or highly motivated 8th graders - if we can find them a partner.  High School students will have priority in partnerships.  Speech is for both Jr. and Sr. High.

Q: What is STOA?
A:  From their website: Stoa is a national High School and Junior High Speech and Debate organization serving the needs of privately educated, Christian Homeschooling families. Stoa exists to train Christian homeschooled youth in speech and debate to better communicate a Biblical world view. Each year the Stoa Board offers the National Invitational Tournament of Champions (NITOC), inviting students from across the United States to perform, speak and debate to the glory of God. StoaUSA

Q: Do I have to be a homeschooler to participate?
A:  STOA sets the policy.  The short answer is: YES - A privately home schooled student.
For more info check out their site http://stoausa.org/faq/#eligibility_link

Q: What is the cost to participate?
A: We are estimating the cost to join the club at $300 for the year.  STOA membership is an additional $50 fee, competition attire will cost a penny or two, and depending on your commitment level tournaments can be the bulk of your expense.

Sac,Pottery classes,$140,Tuesdays 5:30 to 7:30

POTTERY CLASSES:

Throwing Basics- Beginning Wheel Throwing

Tuesday Nights
Day: Tuesdays
Time: 5:30-7:30 PM
Instructor: Chuck Owens

Introducing a new Tuesday Night clay class at Alpha Fired Arts. Throwing Basics-Begining Wheel Throwing with CSUS Ceramics professor Chuck Owens.
Monthly class sessions. Classes begin and are billed at the first of the month.
Four  week open studio course fee is $140 which includes:  50 pounds of firing and free use of the potter’s studio during store hours when classes are not in session.
About the class: In the wheel throwing class at Alpha Fired Arts, Chuck will guide students to explore the throwing process and its potential to create a variety of forms, both functional and sculptural. He has been working closely with students at SacState to develop a thorough understanding of pottery techniques and aesthetics where he has gained tremendous respect for pottery, its history and purpose in contemporary culture. But his passion remains in the sculptural realm, using wheel thrown and altered shapes to build with; creating complex and expressive volumes. At Alpha Fired Arts, he is most enthusiastic about teaching without specific assignments where he can offer individuals the freedom and support to follow their own interests and make rapid progress in their ability to use the wheel.
About the instructor: Born and raised in Sacramento, Chuck began throwing pots at Del Campo high school in 1991. Since then he has been developing his artistic practice in ceramic art through educational experiences at Northern Arizona University (BFA, 2002) and Bowling Green State University (MFA, 2005). He has taught classes and given workshops at various art centers around the country. After returning home to the Sacramento area, he continued to develop as a practicing artist while teaching ceramic arts at the Southside Art Center (2007-2013), Panama Pottery(2008-2009), and University of the Pacific(2013). Chuck Owens currently teaches beginning wheel throwing and beginning hand building, at California State University, Sacramento’s Art Department in the ceramics area(2013-present).

Cost: $140.00
