Introducing a new Tuesday Night clay class at Alpha Fired Arts. Throwing Basics-Begining Wheel Throwing with CSUS Ceramics professor Chuck Owens.
Monthly class sessions. Classes begin and are billed at the first of the month.
Four week open studio course fee is $140 which includes: 50 pounds of firing and free use of the potter’s studio during store hours when classes are not in session.
About the class: In the wheel throwing class at Alpha Fired Arts, Chuck will guide students to explore the throwing process and its potential to create a variety of forms, both functional and sculptural. He has been working closely with students at SacState to develop a thorough understanding of pottery techniques and aesthetics where he has gained tremendous respect for pottery, its history and purpose in contemporary culture. But his passion remains in the sculptural realm, using wheel thrown and altered shapes to build with; creating complex and expressive volumes. At Alpha Fired Arts, he is most enthusiastic about teaching without specific assignments where he can offer individuals the freedom and support to follow their own interests and make rapid progress in their ability to use the wheel.
About the instructor: Born and raised in Sacramento, Chuck began throwing pots at Del Campo high school in 1991. Since then he has been developing his artistic practice in ceramic art through educational experiences at Northern Arizona University (BFA, 2002) and Bowling Green State University (MFA, 2005). He has taught classes and given workshops at various art centers around the country. After returning home to the Sacramento area, he continued to develop as a practicing artist while teaching ceramic arts at the Southside Art Center (2007-2013), Panama Pottery(2008-2009), and University of the Pacific(2013). Chuck Owens currently teaches beginning wheel throwing and beginning hand building, at California State University, Sacramento’s Art Department in the ceramics area(2013-present).
