Sac (TBA), Wilderness Day for Pre-Teens & Teens, Nov 4, 9 to 1pm

I am talking to the wonderful people at http://www.earthboundskills.com/. I  have arranged for them to come to Sacramento and do one of their sessions. It is for 9-13 year olds , and will be on November 4th from 9am to 1pm. The location is TBA, but will be in SAcramento (most likely Effie Yeaw).
The cost would range from $28-40, depending on how many kids, and how long we decide the program should last (4 hours minimum).  I need a minimum of 10 kids, max will be 14.
They are vendors with South Sutter :).
If your child is interested, please email me the name and age privately.
You can get a rough idea of what they will do if you look at their day sessions or homeschool classes they hold in Chico.

Field Trip! Election Camp 2014: Politics and Pizza

Politics and Pizza
Election Camp – 2014
Taught by Anne Weiland and Elise Pope
Election Camp (pizza included!) will be an informative and action-packed day for homeschooled youth, grades 4-12, to find out about our American election processes, including national, state and local races.  Don’t let this teachable moment pass you by!  We are already hearing the campaign commercials and getting a few mailers, maybe even a robocall.  Do we know which offices are up for grabs in November?  Which propositions are on the ballot?  Which district are we in since the most recent redistricting?
We’ll help you answer those questions and many more at Election Camp, 2014.  Camp will be taught by Anne Weiland and Elise Pope, both deeply involved in homeschool graduate Marcel Weiland’s campaign for California State Senate in 2010.  We’ve seen the election process from the inside and we’ll share with your students what we’ve learned, how they can get involved, as well as some stories from the campaign.
During the morning, we’ll cover:
F Structure and organization of local, state and national elections; partisan and non-partisan
F Election 2014: Who’s running? What are the issues?
F Why voting and participation matter
F How campaigns develop a winning message
                F And much more...

After a lunch break, we’ll actually participate (after plenty of training) in a local campaign!  We may drop literature at targeted homes, knock on doors or make phone calls.
Parents: You are encouraged to come and participate at no charge.  We will particularly need you from 2:00pm – 4:00pm because the campaign activities will likely involve driving.  We believe that you will learn and benefit as much as your student does. If you would like to invite your child’s friend and offer to bring them, we are not requiring that every child bring his parent.
Dates:    Friday, October 17, 2014 10am-4pm at Round Table Pizza, 2234 Sunrise Blvd, Rancho Cordova
                                                                           OR
Saturday, October 25, 2014 10am-4pm at Round Table Pizza, 4885 Granite Dr, Rocklin
Cost: $65 per student, which includes pizza!, instruction and all handouts.

  • Have a difficult time getting organized, planning
his or her time, and then managing time?
  • Complete assignments and homework only to fail to turn them in?
  • Act before thinking?

This talk will give you a glimpse into the executive functions of the brain and how these functions impact education.  Emotional control, response inhibition, and working memory are executive functions that will be addressed.  We will share stories, learn about multiple executive functions of the brain and look at possible solutions to executive skill deficits.

Pony Express Story class in Old Sac

I have been requested to do the Pony Express Story in old Sacramento. Class will be from 10:00 - 12::00 on October 1st. Cost is $35.00 per family. Here is the information:
October 1st -The Adventures of the Pony Express

Howdy partners. Come along with Ranger Bruce and
learn about the Pony Express. The mail was delivered to Sacramento from St.
Joseph, Mo. Believe it or not mail got through in 10 days. Men and boys risked
their lives to get the mail past the Indians, buffalo stampedes, and prairie
fires. I will teach you about one very famous 11 year old boy, from right here
in Sacramento, who rode for the Pony Express. He became a living legend.
Many of the riders went on to become world famous. Some joined up with Buffalo
Bill and traveled the world. You will learn about the young girl named “Little
Miss Sure Shot” and some of her incredible marksmanship. Yes, you guessed it,
Annie Oakley. You young gals will want to learn about her. Ranger Bruce will
give every student a playing card, shot through the center heart, by Annie.
(reproduction)  She liked to shoot the middle heart, on the 5 of hearts.
Take a look at a playing card. Could you hit the card at all at 100 feet?
Join me in old Sacramento for a fun lesson.  Time – 10:00 – 12:00
Cost - $35.00 per family. Meet me in front of the RR museum. Parents &
grandparents are always free!
It should be fun for all. After we will visit an old one room
schoolhouse and Ranger Bruce will teach you all about school in the 1880's.
Contact Bruce if you want to attend. 916-725-3630

For 2014 we have brought back the ever popular venomous reptile display featuring more than 45 venomous species from around the world including King Cobras and Black Mambas. Brad’s World Reptile will also be setting up a reptile education center to teach you about the world of reptiles. And, who can forget Izod the Alligator. Izod and Wild Things will be back to give you an opportunity to meet a 10ft 100lb alligator. We also provide the opportunity to purchase a new reptile pet from one of the many professional reptile breeders at the event. The show features all the latest reptile products needed to care for your new reptile pet. The Sacramento Reptile show is your one stop for everything reptile in Sacramento.

S.F. Bay Area Science Festival on Oct. 23rd-Nov.1st

The festival runs from Oct. 23rd–Nov. 1st and occurs all over the Bay Area. For more information, see http://www.bayareascience.org/.

One point of interest: The Bay Model Visitors Center, which is operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers is located in Sausalito.

Pursuant to the BA Sci. Fest., on Saturday, October 25th, at 1:30 PM, the Bay Model team intends to fill the Bay Model from scratch. This is an uncommon opportunity to witness the unfolding of [25,000] years of geological/natural history and human action. Did you know that they entire SF Bay estuary is only about 6,000 years old? That our estuary sits in a valley, whereas most similar geological structures sit at in river deltas? (Think Nile, Volga, Mississippi, Yangtze, Amazon, etc.)

No reservations needed on October 25th, they’ll just fill it and narrate, and whoever is there can see and learn and enjoy.

At the Bay Model Visitors Center, admission is free, programs are free, and parking is free.

More information: http://www.spn.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/BayModelVisitorCenter.aspx.

FYI, the ferry terminal in Sausalito is about 1 mile from the Visitors Center, very walkable!

AIM Fundraiser

One of our moms, Susan Heuser Muse, and her husband Phil, are embarking on an incredible short term mission to Cambodia.  The fundraising timing is limited, so I am here to ask that you prayerfully consider donating making this a reality.  They have created a simple to follow website that details their needs.  You can contribute towards a single need for the AIM long term missionaries, such as child care, a date night for the missionaries in the field, the retreat cost, or the hotel stay.  Or you can contribute to the general fund and they will apply where needed most.

ALSO, (And this is so terrific), we are welcome to write a letter of encouragement to the missionary couple that we are supporting, and Susan will make sure it will be delivered to them.

Can you imagine being a front line warrior for Christ in the battle of sex trafficking?  These missionaries deserve our support, prayers, and words of encouragement.  In their faith, they stand upon the waves and go where feet may fail.

We will have Susan share her experience with us upon return.  Let's get here there first...
