Dr. Karen Jensen on Monday, June 23 at 7 pm Grace Bible Church Roseville

Do your friends have questions about God, science, or the Bible?

On Monday, June 23 at 7:00 p.m., come hear biologist Dr. Karen Jensen, as she answers, biblically and scientifically, the question, "Why do bad things happen in God's creation?," revealing the true origin of poisonous snakes, spiders, thorns, and other broken parts of our fallen world.

Dr. Karen Jensen earned her PhD in biology from Loma Linda University, specializing in plant fossils. She has taught elementary, high school, and college level science and helped to develop the ICR Creation & Earth History Museum in San Diego

Invite your friends and family to hear her unique presentation linking Genesis 1-3 in a very comprehensive and logical progression linking it to today’s fallen world.

Also, please keep praying for Naomi Johnston as she is still in the hospital healing from surgery from a sore on her foot and the doctors will be deciding on Monday what to do next.

In Christ,
Chuck and Sandy Yarbrough

Placer County Youth Orchestra Summer Chamber Music Boot Camp

Placer County Youth Orchestra

~Summer Chamber Music Boot Camps ~
one of our best events of the year

June 23-28 Concert June 27 - camp#1
July 14-19 Concert July 18 - Camp #2

Valley Springs Presbyterian Church

Classes run daily from 10:00-4:00 with a concert on Friday evening. Saturday students will participate in morning workshops and then have an afternoon of celebration of accomplishment at the Rocklin Water Park

So then…What are the benefits of Chamber Boot Camp?

***Summer is a great time to hone down skills and become a better musician.
In the summer it is possible to give the time and attention to concentrated playing that the rest of the school year doesn’t always afford while still giving time for vacation and relaxation from the weekly grind of the regular year. Boot camp helps allow for vacation without losing your, “chops” and in fact gaining skills.

***Boot camp is very important for those wanting to move up to the next level whether going from beginner to intermediate or intermediate to regular PCYO, moving from second to first violin (or forward in general). It also affords our most advanced students to work on leadership skills as well as chamber opportunities.

***Community, musical identity and friendship becomes very defined and developed during the boot camp weeks. This is very important to musical development. We hope to use the boot camp this year to seed future smaller chamber groups that can go on throughout the year.

After doing these camps for three years now, I am so convinced that they are one of the best ways to help our musicians develop. I enjoy every day we spend not just for the musical fun we have, but also for the growth I see in each and every student.

Joy is a feisty, abrasive, intelligent New York divorcee whose sharp-edged, no-nonsense attitudes take Lewis by surprise. Bursting unexpectedly into Lewis's world, Joy shocks his associates and awakens him to deep emotions he has written about, but never experienced. Slowly he opens his heart to this woman, and experiences love on a whole new level. But life is made up of delicate balances, and Lewis must confront a difficult truth: "that a heart awakened to great love is also opened to great pain."

Auditions for  Oscar Wilde's

The Canterville Ghost

                  (performing October/Nov)

Auditioning in June/July DATE coming soon!

Characters:

Hiram B. Otis:  The American Minister to the Court of St. James.

Lord Canterville: The owner of Canterville Chase, who moved his family out of the home when the haunting by the ancestral ghost became too much.

Mrs. Lucretia "Lucy" Otis: had been a celebrated New York belle, is now a very handsome, middle-aged woman, with fine eyes, and a superb profile.

Miss Virginia Otis:  A kind, quiet, polished, but slightly tomboy-ish young woman of 15

Washington Otis:  Virginia's older brother; wears gardenia button-holes.

Samuel and Stanley Otis:  Twin sons of Hiram and Lucy-Nick-named Stars & Stripes

Mrs. Umney:  The Chase housekeeper, an older woman who, usually, ignores the ghost

Sir Simon De Canterville: the ghost

Cecil, The Duke of Cheshire: A young British gentleman who wants to court Virginia

Synopsis: Adapted from the short story, the Canterville

Ghost takes

place in an old English country house, Canterville Chase, which has

all the accoutrements of a traditional haunted house. Descriptions

of the wainscoting, the library panelled in black oak, and the armour

in the hallway characterize the Gothic setting. Wilde mixes the

macabre with comedy, juxtaposing devices from traditional English

ghost stories such as creaking floorboards, clanking chains, and

ancient prophecies with symbols of contemporary American

consumerism.

Wilde used a myriad of comic sources to shape his story.

Thomas De Quincey's "Murder Considered as One of the Fine

Arts," a satirical essay, is one apparent source. Wilde would

also have been aware of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey

(1818), a parody of the Gothic novel so popular in the early

nineteenth century. Finally, Wilde's own experience on the

lecture circuit in the United States undoubtedly helped him

ridicule stereotypical American behavior. Indeed, one of the

major themes in the story is the culture clash between a

sixteenth-century English ghost and a late nineteenth-century

American family. But the story also examines the disparity

between the public self and the private self, a theme to which

Wilde would return again in his later writings.

Online Faith Based Academy

Note from Heily:  I received this information about this online school but wasn’t sure if it was Christian based or not.  I wrote the school to ask and this is the response I received…FYI…

Heily,

We are a faith based organization. Our school started almost 30 years ago as an independent study program and has grown now to 5 campus locations in Georgia. Five years ago we started the Online school to meet the needs of those students who were not able to go to the campuses every week. We are not affiliated with a church or denomination and we accept students of all ages and backgrounds from around the world. All of our curriculum will have references to biblical truths. Most of it comes directly from Alpha Omega educational materials.

Thank You,

Don Stoll

City on the Hill / ages 14-18 / become mock legislators

This is an excellent program!   See attached documents for more information.  If interested, contact Danielle.  daniellec@capitolresource.org

I wanted to take a moment to let you know about a program for high school students offered by Capitol Resource Institute.

Now in its 27th year, this outstanding program has helped train young leaders in the legislative and political processes.

During the week-long conference Christian students aged 14-18 from all across California become mock legislators. They carry real legislation being debated that year in the actual legislature. While busy passing their bills through committee hearings, and debating legislation in floor sessions, they must also contend with the political aspect of governing as they run for party leadership.

No where else can young Christians obtain such hands-on training for the political and governing arenas. The apex of the conference is the final day, when students debate their bills on the floor of the California legislature.

In addition to the legislative training, students receive world view training, hearing edifying speakers from many different walks of life. Students are also encouraged in their walk with the Lord as they attend daily worship services and Bible studies.

Every year both students and staff leave City with a passion to return home and change the world for Christ. Perhaps the greatest testament to City's impact is the students who return year after year to continue honing their skills. So empowering is City, many families send all of their children.

Students forge lifelong friendships with other young people who share their values, each student will gain a greater understanding of their government. This knowledge will equip them to be informed and engaged voters, holding their elected officials accountable.

Mark your calendar --> CRI's annual City on the Hill Youth Leadership Conference will take place July 15-20, 2014.

To learn more about the conference and download an application, visit www.CityontheHill.org. Cost of the conference is $400. Scholarships are available.
