Dance Classes in Auburn

FYI.  Contact Lara at lajancamacho@yahoo.com if interested.

Caitlyn, a 14-year old freshman would love the opportunity to teach dance to your children for a one week session. She has been training in dance for 8 years, various styles, and has competed in dance for 4 years. She has been on her studio company dance team for 4 years, and most recently on the senior team. Last year she was incredibly humbled to have been chosen as Stacey Tookey's (So You Think You Can Dance) "Die Hard Dancer" for the convention weekend out of 100's of dancers. And best of all, she LOVES teaching & sharing her GOD-given gift!

During her Spring break, April 14th-18th, Caitlyn is offering five, 1-hour a day classes for 2 different age groups. The ages will be 5-7 years old jazz/ballet and an 8-11 years old jazz/hip-hop. Caitlyn is hoping to have a short dance for each age group to show on Friday :) Also, she is needing a minimum of 4 students per class and a maximum of 6.

The cost for the week is $50 a student. All classes will be held at Auburn Grace Church on Olympic Way in Auburn. Caitlyn is tentatively planning on having the 5-7 year old class from 10-11am, and the 8-11 year old class from 11-12pm.

Please contact us at lajancamacho@yahoo.com to sign-up or for more details.

BIG HOMESCHOOL GIVEAWAY!

Good news!
Forest Lake Christian School will be donating some educational supplies to our giveaway on March 29th.  FLCS was started by a homeschooling family and they are happy to be able to provide these supplies to the homeschooling families coming to my house on March 29th.   I won’t know until late next week exactly what they will be donating, but more than likely it will include quite a bit of curriculum – and it’s all free to you!!  I’ve also done more spring cleaning in my house and have added puzzles, kites, and much more.  My empty closets = your full closets/classrooms!  :o)  See my e-mail below about the giveaway details if you haven’t already seen it.
Heily

From: Heily Young [mailto:heilyyoung@jps.net]

As many of you know, a couple years ago when we finished homeschooling, we filled our garage and driveway with many years worth of homeschool items and gave everything away.  I did keep some things at that time though - maybe denial that our homeschooling days were over (ha ha) but I also thought I would still use some things.  Well, we have now done a thorough spring cleaning of our home/attic (also in preparation for a home remodel) and I have lots more to giveaway!  Below is a partial list of the things that will be available on Saturday, March 29th.  Besides homeschool related items, we will have other household items as well.

Everything will be free, however, if you find something that will be useful to you and you are able to pay a little something, we will have a donation box set up.  All money will go toward packing 300,000 meals for starving children in the world at the Feed My Starving Children mobile pack this coming fall (October 23-25).  Many of you have packed meals with us before at this annual event (there are always hundreds of homeschoolers that participate each year!).  There is no pressure at all to give – if money is tight - just come, take what will be useful to you – and be blessed!

The last time we did this type of a giveaway, pretty much everything was gone in 90 minutes – it was crazy, but in a really fun kind of way!  :o)  So….we are opening the garage doors at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 29th, and we’ll be done by 10:00.  Our address is 1312 Daisy Court in Roseville (near Sunrise and Cirby).  We live on the right hand side at the end of Daisy Court.  All we ask is no early shopping/reserving please.

Here are just some of the items that will be available:

Curriculum (Physics, Institute for Excellence in Writing, Calculus, 3 sets of Write Shop, Business Management, Algebra, Home Economics, Spanish, Bible courses, and more)
Books – all kinds and lots of them!
College Planning Guide
Furniture (dining room set with six chairs, book cases, TV cabinet with TV included – see 4 pictures in attached document - and maybe also a file cabinet)
Brother sewing machine (old, but works – picture in attached document)
Craft items (paint, paper, feathers, beads, lots of other misc. items)
Office supplies (drawers, file holders, paper, binders, etc.)
CDs & DVDs – both educational and entertainment
Games!

Kingdom Builder Books Summer and Fall Classes Available!

FYI – go to website for contact information.

Classes are already filling!!!

Our Summer 2014 and Fall 2014 schedules are out and registration is open! We have made a few changes this year. The class sizes will be reduced for several classes. This means that classes will be filling up early. Please don’t wait to the last second to sign up.

In the past Kingdom Builder has picked up the supply fees for the individual classes. Unfortunately we can’t continue to do this and keep our class rates the same. For summer there will be a $10 per child registration fee, and for fall there will be a $20 per child registration fee. This will help offset the class supply costs.

The schedule is posted at www.kingdombuilderbooks.com

Placer County Homeschool Curriculum / Materials / Educational Toys

Welcome homeschool families,

I am a homeschool mom who, over the past months, saw a need and after talking with my husband created this page.  Most book sales and conferences happen a few times in a school year and I am not able to travel around to all of them with the hopes of finding what I need.  I am sure many of you have book shelves full of materials that you don’t use but someone else can but have a limited group of people to give or sell them to. This can be a year round opportunity to find what you need and sell what you don’t use.  Save the shipping costs!

This is a closed group. Anyone can see the group and who's in it. Only members see posts.  If at any time there are enough requests for wanting this group to be secret then please speak up.

Because it is my heart’s desire to help other home school families I have created another file with links to local homeschool support groups. But you might even meet other homeschool families on this page.

I have also created a file for other ways of buying and selling your homeschool materials locally.

To bump your post to the top of the page then type bump in your comment section and your post will automatically bring itself to the top.

On the right hand side under the group picture there is a magnifying glass. Here you can type in your name and find all your posts if you need to update or delete.  You can also type in something you’re looking for and see if someone is selling it.

HAVE FUN GETTING TO KNOW AND SUPPORT OTHER HOMESCHOOL FAMILIES!
It can be a scary world out there.  So many unknowns.  Be encouraging to others.  Many families have successfully gone before you. You are not alone.  BTW: Jesus really does have all the answers.  Consider His guidance first.  If you don't know what that means just PM (personal message) me and I'll share His story with you.

Speech and Debate Tournament Judge Recruitment

FYI.  See the information below for how to sign up.  Contact Kathy Anderson at (530) 676-5586 if you have any questions.
----------------------------
As you may know, our family is involved in a homeschool speech and debate club for students ages 12-18. They practice weekly, and participate in tournaments throughout the year.

Many of the tournaments are out of the area, but we are having a local one coming up soon at: American River College in Sacramento (off I-80 and Madison on College Oak Drive) from April 13 through April 16, 2014.

We are in need of folks from our community as well as friends and family to come and help judge at the tournament. No experience is necessary (really! none!), and I hope you will consider serving as one of many judges we need to help fill over 1200 judging slots. It’s fun and easy, and no experience is necessary because we give a short orientation prior to the round to help you fill out your ballots

The time requirement is approximately 2-1/2 hours, and we have slots available throughout the day or evening. Anyone over 18 and a graduate from high school can judge. We are seeking a mix of people from varying backgrounds - teachers, doctors, mailmen, homemakers, pastors, business owners, college students - if you speak English and are not hearing impaired, you are perfect! You just sit back, enjoy the speech, and fill out ballots. We offer refreshments, too, as well as help with reserved parking at American River College.

Would you be able to help us and volunteer for about 2-1/2 hours? There are lots of interesting events to choose from including:

Speech Events: Dramatic and humorous (which are like acting/story-telling), impromptu, extemporaneous (current events), apologetics, expository (using props), persuasive, and original speeches.

Team Policy Debate: Resolved: That the United States Federal Government should substantially reform its marine natural resource policies.

Lincoln Douglas Debate: Resolved: The United States has a moral obligation to mitigate international conflicts.

You can register for the day and time that best fits your schedule by going to our website at: http://capital-idea.homeschooldebate.net Once you are in the website, click “Judge Registration” at the top of the page and follow the instructions. You will receive confirmation by email.

If you have any questions, you can email capital.idea.tournament@gmail.com. We are grateful for any assistance you can offer us. Your help is valuable and appreciated. We know you will come away wanting to do it again next year as it is not hard and it’s a lot of fun. Please go to https://capital-idea.homeschooldebate.net/ today so you can register and reserve your spot in the event that you choose. Call me if you have questions – Kathy Anderson (530) 676-5586

Yuba Sutter Homeschool Convention + lunch / RSVP/March 15 / $5 donation

On Saturday, March 15, from 9am - 4pm, Grace Baptist Church on the corner of Walton and Bogue in Yuba City will be hosting Yuba Sutter Homeschool Convention.

This is a Grace Baptist Church sponsored event, they are requesting a $5 donation to attend the convention, and this includes lunch. An RSVP would be helpful for lunch planning purposes.

There will be Vendors there, I don't know who or how many. There are several speakers on different topics that will be repeating workshops throughout the day.

Please pray for the church and the people putting on the convention, they have been working hard and there is lots more to do.

Here is the information I have about the workshops to date, in no particular order.

Workshop Topic: Choring Isn't Boring by Daisy Phillip

Workshop Description: Daisy Philipp has five children and has been homeschooling since 1997.  She is nearing the end of her homeschool career since her baby will graduate from high school next year.   In the Philipp home chores were taught incrementally and faithfully beginning in toddlerhood.  Come to the Choring Isn't Boring workshop for help, organization and encouragement in this vital area of your child's development.

#############################################################
Workshop Topic: Co-ops Fun, Friends, and Education in one place by Amber Szabo

Workshop Description: One of the arguments we hear the most against homeschooling is "How will they be socialized?"   Most of us homeschoolers probably laugh at that question because we know that most of our days are filled with socializing.   Learn what a Co - op is and how you can use it to your educational and socializing benefit.   Amber has headed everything from a Meal Co - op to a Preschool Co - op and she can't wait to share how it can enrich your homeschooling and fellowshiping experiences.
#############################################################
Workshop Topic: Homeschooling and Special Education Services by Alyssa FukumotoWorkshop Times: 1:35, 2:10
Workshop Description: Description:  Workshop will cover developmental milestones (how to "spot" any special needs your child might have), categories for qualifying for special education services (and what services are typically offered), and how to use community resources (Family Soup, etc.).

#############################################################
Workshop Topic: Preschooling Fundamentals by Samira Fraher
Workshops Times: 10:15, 1:00, 2:45
Workshop Description: If you need some practical, helpful tips to get the most out of your children’s preschool years, then this is the place for you. Samira will bring lots of hands-on materials and other resources which she found useful. Her approach to those golden preschool years was not particularly rigid or highly structured. Her goal was to “do school” in such a way that they just thought they were having fun.

#############################################################
Workshop Topic: Homeschooling 101 by Heather Anderson
Workshops Times: 9:40, 1:00
Workshop Description:  An introduction to the world of homeschooling. Educating newcomers to homeschooling options to choose from and how to tailor homeschooling for your family.  This workshop will include all of the resources available in the Yuba Sutter Area.

Workshop Topic: Homeschooling 102 by Heather Anderson
Workshops Times: 10:50, 2:10
Workshop Description: You have chosen to homeschool but do not know where to start.  A hands-on workshop of the next steps in starting out homeschooling.  Including teaching options, learning styles, and viewing of curriculum.

#############################################################
Workshop Topic: An Introduction to Classical Education by Jason Lucas Gyori
Workshop Times: 10:50, 1:00
Workshop Description: The classical model of education is quickly gaining prominence as many classical Christian schools open throughout the country.  Moreover, many families that educate their children at home are also looking to this time-tested method to give their children an education of distinction.  In this workshop we will discuss some of the reasons why classical education is experiencing a rebirth, what classical education is, and some simple ways that you can institute classical methods into your home education experience.  Finally, we will equip you with some resources to help you begin your journey into the classical model so that your house can mirror that of Proverbs 24:3-4 that states "By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures."
#############################################################
Workshop Topic: Classical Education during the Elementary Years by Nancy Dayton
Workshop Times: 2:10
Workshop Description: Join Nancy as she describes how you can engage your children in a rich lifestyle of learning during the elementary years using classical methods. These methods focus on the developmental stage of children during the elementary years, also known as the grammar stage. Nancy’s philosophy is to find the beauty and elegance of simplicity by focusing on what is important while helping your children develop a love of learning, shepherding their hearts, and having fun.
##################################################
Workshop Topic: Staying the Course: Classical Homeschooling through High School by Elizabeth Todd
Workshop Times: 10:15, 1:00, 2:10
Workshop Description: Join Elizabeth as she describes how to classical educate your children within a Biblical worldview during the high school years, utilizing the natural stages of development. The classical model teaches children the art of learning, which they can apply to any new endeavor. Building upon the grammar and dialectical stages of learning, the rhetorical stage is when students begin to evaluate and synthesize information. They can create and persuade. Now is the time to enjoy the fruits of your shared labor with your children! You can provide your children with the tools they need to encounter the world’s challenges with confidence and a strong Biblical foundation.
####################################################
Workshop Topic: Beyond the Elementary Years: When the Questions Get Tough by Tracy Thomas
Workshop Times: 9:40, 10:15, 1:00, 1:35
Workshop Description: When children move beyond the elementary years, they begin asking tough questions and experimenting with their debate skills, to put it nicely. In the classical model, we call this the dialectic stage.  Many parents would love to be able to skip right over these important years, and go straight from that sweet, engaging child to a responsible, engaging adult. Many parents sacrifice homeschooling during these years because they feel unable to maintain a good relationship and teach their tween or teen at the same time. Come discuss some practical tips and tools for maintaining relationships while homeschooling teens. Tracy will share how she endeavors to keep her children’s hearts while maintaining an educational standard.
####################################################
Workshop Topic: Homeschool as a Home-Based Private School - find out how and why by Michelle Stadel
Workshop Times: 9:40, 10:50, 1:00, 1:35
Workshop DescriptionMichelle will show you the easy steps to establish your own private school at home. She will also share where private homeschoolers go for help with paperwork, testing, selecting curriculum, and free curriculum. Learn about the freedom of homeschooling outside the jurisdiction of the CDE and most state education regulations. Find out why private homeschooling might be a fit for your family.

####################################################
Workshop Topic: Common Core Standards:  the pros and cons by Kim Turner
Workshop Times: 9:40, 10:50, 1:35, 2:45
Workshop Description: Come hear how Kim’s research over the past year and a half will affect homeschooling parents and their children.  This workshop will cover:  What is Common Core?  How did it come about?  What does it look like in the classroom?  What can we do about it now?  How can we respond lovingly to those who disagree?  You will not want to miss the conversation that will take place about how the federal government has now taken away power from the states in creating education in order to create a one-size fits all student model.  Kim wishes that all will be well-informed and that the truth may not only be spoken, but heard, which is why she believes God has strategically placed her in the trenches.

I don’t have descriptions for these workshops:
