August 22th – Deluxe Tour Of An Old Schoolhouse    Place:  Old Sacramento – Kick off the new school year with your students and visit a one room schoolhouse. This is a real eye opener if you’re a student today. In the 1800’s, life in a one room schoolhouse was very different than today. Back in the 1800’s (old school) you were at school by 8:00 and that was after you worked at home. Children were up by 6:00am and helped milk the cow and collect eggs from the chickens. After that you walked to school (some children walked up to 6 miles) and began your lessons. Come join me and see what life as a student was like. You better obey the school rules or the teacher might swat you. (Limits were up to 10 swats) Boys and girls were separated in school. Do you know why? We will meet for a morning of learning and fun. You will get to sit in an old desk for your lesson. Meet Ranger Bruce in front of the Railroad Museum. He always carries a green clipboard.

August 28th - State Capital Tour - Sacramento. Ranger Bruce will take you on a special deluxe tour of the capital. We will walk around all 3 levels and see the House and Senate chambers. I will teach you about our government and how it works. Time –  (No building fees – Parking meters or garage available) - meet on the EAST steps of the capital. That’s the steps with the sun shining on them. Bruce will have a green clipboard so you can identify him. He will also show you the tree that went to the moon. Yep! That’s right. Did you know that the grounds around the Capital were planted in 1872 and 16 of the trees are State and National champions for size? Join Ranger Bruce and learn while you’re having fun. That’s the best way!
From a homeschool Mom......."Wow, are you in for a treat if you haven't been through this tour with Bruce. He can take you into many areas that the public never sees. The capital is huge and beautiful on the inside. The tour includes both House and Senate chambers, as well as all historical areas. Bruce took us to our senator's office and we met with her for an hour. She opened the door to the floor of the senate and we sat at her desk and took pictures. Soooooooooo cool. He even got us into the governor's office and we all got his personal business card. He was not in town but it was GREAT!" THANKS, BRUCE! YOU’RE THE BEST…………..Brenda

ww018.gifSept 5th – The Adventures of The Pony Express - Howdy partners. Come along with Ranger Bruce and learn about the Pony Express. The mail was delivered to Sacramento from St. Joseph, Mo. Believe it or not mail got through in 10 days. Men and boys risked their lives to get the mail past the Indians, buffalo stampedes, and prairie fires. I will teach you about one very famous 11 year old boy, from right here in Sacramento, who rode for the Pony Express. He became a living legend.  Many of the riders went on to become world famous. Some joined up with Buffalo Bill and traveled the world. You will learn about the young girl named “Little Miss Sure Shot” and some of her incredible marksmanship. Yes, you guessed it, Annie Oakley. You young gals will want to learn about her. Ranger Bruce will give every student a playing card, shot through the center heart, by Annie. (reproduction)  She liked to shoot the middle heart, on the 5 of hearts. Take a look at a playing card. Could you hit the card at all at 100 feet?  Join me in old Sacramento for a fun lesson. Meet Ranger Bruce in front of the Railroad Museum. He always carries a green clipboard. Parents & grandparents are always free!

September 11th - The Jedediah Smith Story & Wilderness Survival - Bruce will be teaching you how to survive in the wilderness. Dressed as Jed Smith, Ranger Bruce will teach you what to do if you meet up with a bear, a mountain lion, or a badger. These fellows could kill you. Families should know what to do if you ever meet one. Do you run? Do you throw rocks at them? Are you sure? If you do the wrong things, you could be dead! Jed Smith will teach you how he survived the cold Sierra's and blazing hot Mojave Desert. How long can you live without food? How long without water? Jed will also show you how to keep warm when you body is yelling for heat. Come join Bruce (as Jed Smith) and learn things that may help you in a difficult situation. Where - Bannister Park/Fair Oaks (meet in the small parking lot)

Sept 13th - The Giants of the Garden Tour  – This is a Saturday tour so Dads can join with his family. This is two tours at the Capitol. We will explore the outside gardens, planted in 1872. Second tour is a tour of the inside of the building.  Come join Ranger Bruce on this first tour of the Capital Park. As you walk along the paths you will see the giants. Have you ever seen trees so big that they hold the record for being the largest of their species?  Capital Park has 16 record holders, some are state record holders and others are national title holders. Can you ever remember being in one place where you can see this many record breaking trees?  We will also see a redwood tree that went to the moon on Apollo 14. This is a real picture taking tour if ever there was one.  You will see cross sections of trees and many pine cones. Can you count tree rings and know how old a trees is? Well not always. Find out why.  We will see several monuments along the way.
