BHN Mom's Prayer Night

From Leigh:

Moms only: Friday night, September 12th, 7pm, join me at my house for an evening of prayer.  We will spend the evening in praise and prayer over our homes, homeschools, families, BHN, marriages, whatever is on your heart to place before our Lord. Can't make it, but would like us to pray for you?  Send me an email or text 276-3523

There is power in prayer.  It brings us to the very presence of God.  Prayer allows us to draw closer to Him, to deliver us from our sins and temptations, to align our hearts with His plan and purpose for our lives. Prayer slays the attempt of the enemy to fill us with fear, worry, confusion, and uncertainty.

Our homeschool journey is all about "walking by faith, and not by sight...(2Cor. 5:7).  Prayer is a weapon to a strong walk. Please, join me :)

Sac,Discovery Science Museum/Programming-Robotics Class

(From the SAFTI board)
Hi,
I have started talking with the museum about creating homeschool courses for us and becoming vendors with the charters in the area. She asked me what it is that we'd most like and so I am asking that in other circles to see what programs would benefit the museum and the needs of our learners. Got ideas? Email them to me diazjacqueliner@gmail.com

FOR THIS SEMESTER
PROGRAMMING/ROBOTICS/MINDSTORM

We wanted to find something where a project could be extended beyond a single class period. They are putting together a 6 week course that will likely focus more on programming and less on using the legos, the focus being getting your robot to accomplish specific tasks. I don't have the cost, but it will be lower than you might think since this semester people will be paying out of pocket even if with a charter since they aren't a vendor. Thinking this will be for grades 6th-8th with some flexibility a grade up or down depending on interest/ability. Kids should ideally have some experience with mindstorm.

Talk to me! She is talking with the instructor to figure out times, days. They WANT to be offering more but maybe were offering to the wrong crowd. For example, she scheduled SCRATCH programming but no one signed up so we could get a class in that going easily too.

The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain return to California waters this fall. They are now scheduling one-hour and three-hour educational programs near you.

Ports include: Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland, Sausalito, Redwood City, Antioch, Half Moon Bay, Eureka, Crescent City, Morro Bay, Moss Landing, Ventura, Oxnard, Long Beach, and Oceanside.

Lisa LaBolle, Sunny Brae Middle School, Arcata, Calif., brought her students on a sailing program. She writes: "This is my twenty-fourth year of teaching middle school students, and I can't begin to tell you how rewarding it was to be able to 'bring to life' some of the experiences my students have been reading about."

Each experience has three learning stations:

Life of a Sailor: Learn about the life and work of the common sailors back in the 18th century. Students handle sail lines, helping to raise and lower a sail, conditions permitting. See examples of authentic sailor food, tie basic knots, and learn the lingo of sailors.

Life of an Officer: Students experience the "high tech" tools and skills of navigating a replica 200-year-old sailing ship. Conditions permitting, they'll take the helm, perform traditional navigational calculations, and explore the lives of the captain and other officers.

Early Trade: Students are guided through a global trade cycle involving Spanish, American, Native American, Chinese and English cultures and economies. Students handle replicas of trade artifacts as they explore the business of the world economy.

Detailed information and pricing is available on our Education Programs page. Email program manager Roxie Underwood or call 800-200-5239.

Please forward this email to your friends and colleagues interested in hands-on learning!

Literature Based Writing Classes

I have already heard back from several of you regarding our literature based writing classes, and others of you may still be working on final scheduling decisions, so I just wanted to let you know that I am ordering novels for our classes on Monday.  If you sign your child up for a class after that day, you will be responsible to provide the novel for your child.  As long as your child has been added to the a class list by Monday, the novel will be provided on the first day of class.

Also, all of the novels that we are studying this semester are titles that have an optional companion Total Language Plus study guide.  Some of you have already purchased a study guide for your child to complete while taking our class, but others of you may not even be aware of this option.  The TLP study guide provides daily drill exercises in comprehension questions, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar dictations that correlate with the novel.  As you already know, our classes provide thorough literary analysis, writing, and critical thinking; however, we do NOT provide vocabulary and spelling instruction.  The study guide, along with our class, provides a very comprehensive language arts curriculum all based on the novel your child is studying.  The study guide is not required; it is completely optional.  You know what additional studies you are working on at home; therefore, you know if this is something that will benefit your child or not.  Parents oversee the instruction of the study guide.

I will order the study guides so that you may pick them up on the first day of class.  I just need to know how many to order.  The cost is $25.00 (includes tax and shipping).  You may pay me on the first day of class when you pick up your study guide.  Please simply reply to this email if you would like to purchase a study guide.  If you have any questions about using this guide along with our class, please feel free to contact me.

We’re looking forward to getting started in just a couple of weeks!

Warmly,
Kris
