Potter's School

forward from Heily...
Hi Heily,

Knowing you & I are done with schooling our children, but I got this email from the on-line school that I used for Jonathan to take some high school classes through. This is a Christian,  accelerated on-line school called The Potter School of which I can't sat enough good things about. An excellent alternative for moms of jr. high & high school students. In fact, one of the Science instructors Jono had, Lori McKeeman, is a friend of mind. She teaches physical science, biology, and several other high sch. science classes. Perhaps there are moms in the hm sch. community who would be interested in using this outstanding resource. Knowing how busy you are, do you think you might be able to pass this information on to the Network? I just know what a tremendous blessing it was for us!  If you can, sweet, & if not I do understand.
 The Potter's School - discipleship | scholarship | excellence
Looking for something different?
Looking for something different to academically round out your school year or just make it more interesting? Here are some great courses that belong in multiple categories -- or maybe deserve a category all their own.

Accounting - Full Accounting course, for those who run a business or those who are considering getting an accounting degree or certification.

Bioethics and Family - Science course? Social Science? Literature class? Count it however you like, and even supplement it in any direction you like. This course is a multi-discipline look at a fascinating topic. Moms may particularly enjoy this one too.

Criminal Justice - Within the Criminal Justice system are over 60 types of careers within five major fields: Law Enforcement, Courts/Judiciary, Corrections, Forensic Science, and Private Security. With the added dimension of the World Wide Web and cyber crimes, the field of Criminal Justice is broader than ever. This course is a great intro to the major issues and career opportunities in the field of Criminal Justice.

Constitutional Law - There are lots of "Con Law" courses, but how many are taught by an experienced attorney who will have you arguing real cases in class? Great for the potential law students, or just interested citizens. Great for parents too.

Fairy Tale, Fantasy and Myth - This literature and writing course explores the largely Christian "renaissance" of the fantasy genre, starting with George MacDonald in the late 19th century and continuing into the 20th century with works by Chesterton, Tolkien, Lewis, and L'Engle. Also considers several more recent fantasy offerings from both Christian and non-Christian authors.

Health and Wellness - This Science or Social Science course takes a biblically-integrated spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical approach to nutrition, diseases, body care, stress, anxiety, relationships, addictions, abuse, eating disorders, depression, peer pressure, and more.

Biblical Hebrew - No Grammar Books! No Workbooks! Just you, Esther, and the Hebrew Bible! This class couples an exciting Bible study through the book of Esther with the introductory elements of learning Biblical Hebrew. Great for parents too.

Journalism for the Digital Age - Print is on its way out; digital journalism is in and evolving rapidly. Learn the beat from an experienced successful reporter who started in print and now free-lances for on-line publications.

More Than Words: Art of Communication - Pretty much everyone has to give persuasive presentations from time to time, for school, community, and career. Be ready for it.

Nursing - Are you considering nursing as a profession, or seeking to prepare yourself to enter a competitive medical career? Or are you interested in health, wellness, and how to better take care of others? Do you want to work with children, as a respite care provider, or in a nursing home where a deeper understanding of health and medical care would be beneficial? This course is for you!

Piano and Keyboard in Contemporary Worship and Praise Bands - Taught by a worship leader and musician, this course covers keyboard playing in a variety of contemporary styles including: pop ballad, pop-rock, hard rock, country, country-rock, slow and fast gospel -- all applied to contemporary Christian music. Students will practice exercises and pieces each week on their own, and will regularly upload audio files of their playing for review and comments.

Propositional Logic and Argumentation - Taught by a trial lawyer, this is two courses in one:  Propositional Logic and Art of Argument. It develops the basic skills needed to understand, construct and criticize arguments using the tools of informal logic.

Vocabulary from Latin and Greek Roots - Want to "ace" the SAT vocabulary portion? Or strengthen your writing? This course will help.

Western Philosophy Literature - Have you ever wondered how western philosophy relates to the Bible? This advanced Literature, Writing, and Philosophy course offers a survey of western philosophy beginning with Plato's Republic and continuing through modern philosophical movements such as nihilism and existentialism. Covers background information, context, and explanation of key passages. Essay writing and instruction at the early college level.

Did you see a course you might like? Add it to your TPS enrolled classes for 2014-15. While you're at it, don't forget these essential academic electives...

Research Essay Writing - You need this for pretty much any Humanities course (English, History, etc.) you ever take. Learn to write a great essay.

SAT Preparation - The SAT is a test like any other -- but also one of the primary college acceptance criteria. Learn how to study for it.

Propositional Logic - Foundational to doing well in a Classical or Humanities education, especially for those who don't take much math.
