Ugandan Cultural Immersion Night June 23rd

Hi Homeschooling Friends,
My husband just returned from a trip to Uganda where he spoke at Ugandan churches and visited a school for orphans.  Even though we are done homeschooling, I will forever be a homeschooler at heart J and because his experience was so rich, we would like to share some of the culture he experienced by putting on an educational evening for homeschoolers.  On June 23rd, your family can come to our home and experience a taste of the Ugandan culture and learn about the amazing people there!  Ken’s host in Uganda, Pastor Fred Tumwebaze, will also be here visiting and will share with your children about the Ugandan people and his life experience.  Your invitation is below.  An RSVP is appreciated (so I will know how much food to prepare for sample tasting)    RSVP to heilyyoung@jps.net or 916-782-4411.

Hope you can join us!!

Elevate Speech and Debate Club

FYI.  Contact Elvie with any questions: mama4fran@yahoo.com

Amy Middleton and I are excited to announce that, in August, we will be kicking off a brand new speech and debate club that meets in our neck of the woods (between Folsom and Cameron Park - Location TBD). Please check out our very basic web page to find out what the excitement is about and how you can learn more,

Here is a brief word from Andrew Pudewa on why he fell in love with the program:
"If you have never been to a speech and debate tournament before, I will tell you point-blank you are missing one of the greatest, most inspiring, truly awesome things happening on the planet. Imagine a hundred or more students professionally dressed, profoundly excited about standing in front of peers and judges, arguing for changes in medical malpractice law in an articulate and knowledgeable way, while practicing in between debate rounds persuasive or dramatic speeches for competition. Now, I must confess I am somewhat of a pessimist by nature and often find the world situation somewhat bleak, but going to that first tournament actually gave me hope for our world in a way I had never before experienced. I saw and heard these young men and women preparing themselves with the writing, speaking, teamwork, and leadership skills so desperately needed in our world today—they were in many ways demonstrating the best of the educational world as I knew it. I was profoundly inspired."

45 Minute Essay Writing Workshop , July 27-28

45 Minute Essay Writing Workshop

Overview:
This class is focused towards standardized testing essay requirements, like for the SAT, ACT, and AP English tests, and helps prepare students for that specific portion of the test.
Writing a well thought through essay can be hard enough without the time restraints and, when given these time restraints, many students end up not doing their best because they feel rushed. This class is designed to give students confidence when given a timed essay test and will definitely help with standardized testing timed essays.

Day by Day Outline:

Day one
Go over how to outline in five minutes or less
How to write a well thought through thesis statement in two to three minutes
How to effectively write the essay
How to quickly review and edit with the time left over

Day two
   Mock timed essay (45 minutes)
   Go over essay in class
   Talk about scoring

Dates: July 27-28
Time : 9-11 am
Cost: $50 per student
