We are reaching out to NEW HOMESCHOOLERS or those considering homeschooling. This is a great opportunity to bring a friend to an informal 101 style homeschool meeting.

Are you THINKING about homeschooling? Have you recently pulled your child out of a traditional school setting? Are you struggling to figure out which homeschool method is right for your family?  There are so many resources, which ones should I use?

Essay Writing Workshops January 2017

Essay Writing Intensive 101

Workshop Overview:

Each day will consist of a class time of 3 hours so that each student will get an hour to learn how to affectively approach each focus essay (Basic five paragraph essay, Comparison, Persuasive, Argumentative, and Research essays), one hour to outline and prep for that night’s essay, and then time to ask questions and start actually writing the essay. 

Each day will be outlined as previously stated. However, there will be a need for time on each day, other than the first day, for essay review. Essay review is in place so that each student can grow from their mistakes, their peer’s mistakes, and even what they have each done exceptionally well. 

Also there is the question, how will students finish a research paper in that short amount of time? I will have the students start the research portion of it on the first day and they will be working on that throughout the week. On the last day, which is the day we will be focusing on research essays, we will go over how to effectively write a research paper and they will write it in class and then do a peer review.  

Day by Day Breakdown:

Day One: Basic Five Paragraph Essay

-       Basic intro paragraph elements

-       Basic first, second, and third body paragraphs

-       Go over MLA format

-       Outlining basics

Homework: Essay one – Research Paper one

Day Two: Comparison Essay

-       Basic ways to analyze stories/ literature

-       How to come up with main points

-       Go over plans A and B for Body paragraphs

-       How to outline for this essay

Homework: Essay two – Research Paper two

Day Three: Persuasive Essay 

-       Topics they can choose from

-       Go over a sample essay for format

-       Go over outline

-       Go over ways to format

Homework: Essay three – Research Paper three

Day Four: Argumentative Essay

-       How to develop the argument (pre-writing)

-       Organizing the essay itself

-       Writing the other side of the argument

-       Outlining and formatting 

Homework: Essay four – start Essay five

Day Five: Research Essay

-       Go deeper into researching the topic itself

-       How to format and write the research paper itself

-       Work cited page (MLA)

Each day will be outlined as previously stated. However, there will be a need for time on each day, other than the first day, for essay review. Essay review is in place so that each student can grow from their mistakes, their peer’s mistakes, and even what they have each done exceptionally well. 

On the last day there will be an in class essay “final” that will encompass everything the students have learned over the course of the week.

-       Basic analyzation elements and vocabulary

-       Basic elements to a Passage Free-Response  essay

-       Go over MLA format

-       Outlining basics and essay expectations

-       Go over readings for synthesis essay

45 Minute Essay Writing Workshop

Overview:

This class is focused towards standardized testing essay requirements and helps prepare students for that specific portion of the test. 

Writing a well thought through essay can be hard enough without the time restraints and, when given these time restraints, many students end up not doing their best because they feel rushed. This class is designed to give students confidence when given a timed essay test and will definitely help with standardized testing timed essays. 

Day by Day Outline:

Day one

•   Go over how to outline in five minutes or less

•   How to write a well thought through thesis statement in two to three minutes

•   How to effectively write the essay

•   How to quickly review and edit with the time left over

Day two

•   Mock timed essay (45 minutes)

•   Go over essay in class

•   Talk about scoring

FPM and CHEA - Capitol Day and Leadership Conference

We at FPM are planning our 2017 Capitol Day in conjunction with CHEA's Leadership Conference and we would like you to join us. Every other year, following the November election of our state Senators and Assembly Members, a group of homeschoolers join us to visit each of our legislator's offices at the Capitol in Sacramento. This year, we are partnering with CHEA to cohost this event together with a Leadership Conference here in Sacramento. You are invited to attend Capitol Day on Wednesday evening, February 8th through Friday morning, February 10th and Leadership Conference on Friday afternoon, February 10 through February 11th. You are invited to attend either event or both!

While this is not a "lobby day", we do distribute attractive information packets that tell our legislators about private home education, how it works, and about how it has been a successful educational alternative for many years. This is very important in creating a positive image of private home education with our legislators. 

Capitol Day Includes:

·         Special speakers with insights on the inner workings of the capitol and the importance of your involvement

·         Training Session prior to visiting legislative offices

·         Meeting with legislators and their staff

·         Witnessing our government in action during an active floor session (contingent on a live session being available)

·         A private tour of the Capitol building

Why should you attend Capitol Day?

The freedoms we have today were not handed to us by gracious and generous government officials. The political and philosophical make-up of our current government is not any more disposed to respect or protect the parental right to educate our children at home than it has been in the past. We need to pass on the history and the memories that we have to those taking up the torch so that they too can understand the battle and engage in it. They can't do this if they don't have a knowledge of what has been done by those that have gone before them.

If you want to attend Capitol Day, but cannot make the entire event, you are welcome to join us on Thursday for training and Capitol visits.

Leadership Conference Includes:
