What is National Library Week?

The concept is simple: celebrate libraries and the services they provide.

The National Library Week 2018 celebration marks the 60th anniversary of the first event, sponsored in 1958.

In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee's goals were ambitious.  They ranged from "encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time" to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life." 

In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!"

March 20, 9 to 1:30, Ag Day, 3rd-5th graders, rsvp, Placer county

On behalf of the Placer Resource Conservation District, Placer Farm Bureau, Echo Valley Ranch, and the Gold Country Fair Heritage Foundation, we are hosting an Ag Day educational event on Thursday, March 20th, at the Gold Country Fairgrounds (1273 High St, Auburn, CA 95603). We have two timeslots (9:00 am – 11:00 am or 11:30 am-1:30 pm) available. Your 3rd – 5th grade classes are invited to come and rotate through a set of stations where they will learn about agriculture and natural resources.

Come out and Play Field Handball-EMH March Sport

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Did you know that Field Handball is considered the number two sport in the world! It originated in the early 1900’s in Europe. This fast-paced sport is gaining popularity throughout the world and is played by 39 million people in 159 different nations.

Sport Description:

If your child loved playing flag football, mixed with a little bit of basketball and soccer – this is the sport for them.  It’s such a fun game.  The players have to advance the ball down the field by throwing it to a teammate to get it into the goal which is protected by a goalie. If the ball goes out of bounds or if they are tagged by an opposite team player before throwing it, it goes to the other team. The players must not hold onto the ball for over five seconds.

This PE sport month will offer your child a sense of pride especially when they improve in every game!

Auburn, March 16 – Geology of the Foothills hike, donation, 9 to 12noon, register early

March 16 – Geology of the Foothills hike

Come “rock on” with us Friday, March 16 at 9:00am for a special hike focusing on the GEOLOGY of the foothills.  Our Big Hill Preserves has abundant rock formations, the gently flowing Raccoon Creek, and spectacular panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley. This hike has become one of our most popular!

Docents Karl Mertz, Sarah Roeske, and Bob Niblack are trained geologists. Karl is a retired geology professor from Sac State & Sierra College.  Sarah teaches and does research at UC Davis with a focus on fault zones. And Bob worked for the Department of Water Resources as a hydro-geologist. Together, these docents have many years of experience and have amazing knowledge to share with you.

DISTANCE: The hike will be approximately 4 miles, and may take 3-4 hours depending on the pace of the group and how many stops are made to look at the various rock formations along the way. This will be a slower paced hike with plenty of stops in between to look at the rocks.

DIFFICULTY:  Moderate with uphill and downhill travel, on uneven ground and rough terrain. Possible gain of 500 feet elevation.

OTHER INFO:

This is a wilderness outing in a natural setting:  there are no restrooms, benches, or water available. Please plan ahead and bring what you will need.

There is no charge for the hike, however a suggested donation of $10 per person is appreciated. Your donation helps us continue our work and allows us to keep offering these hikes and other events. We accept cash or checks at the event, or you can donate online via credit card at https://www.placerlandtrust.org/donate/ .

We have a “leave no trace” policy – if you pack it in, please pack it out.

Sorry, NO dogs are allowed on our Preserves, unless service animals.

Please wear sturdy hiking shoes for rocky, steep terrain, and clothing appropriate for the foothill weather conditions. (No flip flops or crocs) You may want a hat, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent.

Bring plenty of water and a brown bag lunch or snacks to enjoy along the way. Don’t forget your camera! You may also want a notepad to jot down notes.

Participants must sign a release of liability found here. 2018 Blank Liability Waiver Photo Release  Please print and bring it with you. One form per person is required.

The hike starts at 9:00am in North Auburn. (Directions will be emailed after registration.)

The deadline to sign up is Noon the Thursday prior to the event unless it fills up first (and this hike always fills up early!) Space is limited. If you register and are unable to attend, please contact janet.voris@placerlandtrust.org ASAP so that you don’t take a spot away from someone else. You may sign up family members by adding their name below on the registration form. (those not in your household are asked to register themselves.)
