Upcoming Homeschool Conferences

Hello Homeschoolers!

If you are like me I am already looking forward to summer and all the possibilities available to learn new homeschooling tips and be ENCOURAGED for the next year!  Below are the dates of all the upcoming Christian Homeschool Conferences in CA. Homeschool conferences are the wind that keep me sailing from year to year! Bring your husband and he’ll understand more of what homeschooling is all about! Or go with a homeschooling friend and make a weekend of it.  Check out the websites for more information and don’t forget to mark your calendar! 

Thursday, June 15th – Saturday, June 17th. Great Homeschool Convention in Ontario, CA. (This is the largest conference in our state) Too many speakers to list, but a few popular speakers are Andrew Peterson, Nick Vujicic, Cynthia Tobias, Sarah Mackenzie and David Stotts (referred to by my kids Drive-Thru History guy).  The conference begins on Thursday afternoon and ends Saturday evening. Pre-registration is $50 per person. $55 at the door or after June 1^st. Friday, July 28th – Saturday, July 29th. Valley Home Educators Convention in Modesto, California.  The conference is held from Friday 10:00 am – 8:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Pre-registration is $35 before July 23^rd.  $40.00 at the door price.  Featured speakers are Heidi St. John, Hal & Melanie Young, Linda Lacour Hobar, Steve Demme and it wouldn’t be a homeschool conference without our very own Reb and Bev Bradley.  Absorb the wisdom, information, and expertise of many Guest Speakers, including Jennifer Pepito, Beth Mora, Patrick Nurre, Kathleen Cotter Lawlerand and more! Writing Intensive Workshop

This  May  a one week writing intensive class is offered for junior high and high school students

( beginning and intermediate ).For the intermediate class the student must have taken the beginning class or finished 10^th grade English. All of the details for each class are listed below. Classes begin May 22^ndand end on May 26th, so please sign up prior to the first class.  The writing courses are offered for children 12-17 years old.

Essay Writing Intensive 101

Workshop Overview:

Each day will consist of a class time of 3 hours so that each student will get an hour to learn how to affectively approach each focus essay (Basic five paragraph essay, Comparison, Persuasive, Argumentative, and Research essays), one hour to outline and prep for that night’s essay, and then time to ask questions and start actually writing the essay. 

Each day will be outlined as previously stated. However, there will be a need for time on each day, other than the first day, for essay review. Essay review is in place so that each student can grow from their mistakes, their peer’s mistakes, and even what they have each done exceptionally well. 

Also there is the question, how will students finish a research paper in that short amount of time? I will have the students start the research portion of it on the first day and they will be working on that throughout the week. On the last day, which is the day we will be focusing on research essays, we will go over how to effectively write a research paper and they will write it in class and then do a peer review.

Day One: Basic Five Paragraph Essay

-       Basic intro paragraph elements

-       Basic first, second, and third body paragraphs

-       Go over MLA format

-       Outlining basics

Homework: Essay one – Research Paper one

Day Two: Comparison Essay

-       Basic ways to analyze stories/ literature

-       How to come up with main points

-       Go over plans A and B for Body paragraphs

-       How to outline for this essay

Homework: Essay two – Research Paper two

Day Three: Persuasive Essay 

-       Topics they can choose from

-       Go over a sample essay for format

-       Go over outline

-       Go over ways to format

Homework: Essay three – Research Paper three

Day Four: Argumentative Essay

-       How to develop the argument (pre-writing)

-       Organizing the essay itself

-       Writing the other side of the argument

-       Outlining and formatting 

Homework: Essay four – start Essay five

Day Five: Research Essay

-       Go deeper into researching the topic itself

-       How to format and write the research paper itself

-       Work cited page (MLA) 

Homework: NONE!

Each day will consist of a class time of 3 hours so that each student will get an hour to learn how to affectively approach each Honors  English and Literature prompt and strategy focus, one hour to outline and prep for that night’s essay, and then time to ask questions and start actually writing the essay. 

Each day will be outlined as previously stated. However, there will be a need for time on each day, other than the first day, for essay review. Essay review is in place so that each student can grow from their mistakes, their peer’s mistakes, and even what they have each done exceptionally well. 

On the last day there will be an in class essay “final” that will encompass everything the students have learned over the course of the week.

Day One: Close Reading and Literature Analysis Skills

-       Basic analyzation elements and vocabulary

-       Basic elements to a Passage Free-Response  essay

-       Go over MLA format

-       Outlining basics and essay expectations

-       Go over readings for synthesis essay

New Homeschool Information Night 5/22 at Bridgeway

Are you new to homeschooling?  Are you THINKING about homeschooling?  Are you struggling to figure out which homeschool method is right for your family?  All these resources, which ones should I use?  Have a friend who is new to homeschooling or thinking about it for the fall? Christian Youth Theatre Summer Camps!

CYT Camps 

Camps feature rotations through drama, dance, voice, and games. Camp will conclude with an impressive SHOWCASE performed for family and friends! This year we will have 3 weeks of camp to choose from in Roseville and Auburn. Camp staff is comprised of professionals from CYT Creative Teams.

We're extending the summer orchestra signup deadline for another week (to 5/16) in order to fill out the ensemble a bit more.  There is still room in every section, but we could especially use the following:

The "Voices of Inspiration Project" and Orchestra invites singers and instrumentalists to be part of a one-time, one-of-a-kind season of playing and performing! Our repertoire will showcase some of the past century's most inspiring musical anthems, specially arranged for the group that comes together this summer.
